Asleep At The Wheel

Only 4 years into this mothering gig and I’m already falling down on the job. It seems that I have been too lax with my darling dears in the tooth brushing department. Mira already has a cavity, and it’s a big ‘un.
At first glance, praise was heaped upon Mira, swelling my motherly bosom with pride. Yes, I have had my child brushing since before she had teeth I thought, mentally patting myself on the back. As I rehearsed my “Mother Of The Universe” speech in my head the dentist suddenly made a clicking noise and an “Ut ohhhhhh” I snapped back to reality to see him cranking her tiny mouth open and poking at a black thing. A BLACK THING?? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! A cavity, one big and bad enough that it needs to be filled immediately. Today I shall pin my unsuspecting, sensory challenged, autistic child down while she is mouth tortured by a man wielding needles and a drill. I feel like the shittiest mom around, especially when I smile and say “The dentist is going to help you” and an evil mad scientist laugh echoes in my head “MUHAHAHAHHAHAHA if you only knew!” Ah well, there goes her love for the dentist.

Awwww don’t feel bad - my oldest had FOUR cavities at his last checkup and I’ve been religious about brushing. One isn’t that bad.

it’s funny the things you suddenly take on as a personal failure once you are a mom. 4? Oh dear! I keep telling myself that it’s like 90% genetics, 10% fruit snacks (fruit snacks bwhahahah gummy snacks is more apropo)

What I want to know is how the dentist felt when you pulled out your camera and said, “d’ya mind if I blog about this?”

Cavities are inevitable sometimes. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Maybe just give her an ice cream or something really sugary as a reward. Would that make her feel better?

After the Bee had to have a tooth pulled because a cavity had abscessed (see, I’m a worse mother than you!), we had our kids start flouride. The water in our town is unflouridated, and it does seem to really help.

Awww don’t worry. Zain had 4 cavities and he is a good brusher. I guess he has to be a better brusher.

Cavities aren’t always from brushing or not brushing. Some people are just prone to them.
She will be fine. If she can stay calm in the beginning, she can make it through the whole thing.

Ack! I hope that it is not too tough on the poor kiddo. I used to have to have laughing gas to get my cavities filled because I was so freaked out. I really need to go and get my teeth looked at.
