HNT~ Tender Loving Care

Typically I am doling out most of the TLC in my house. As a mother, it’s my duty and honor. Tomorrow at 3pm I am relinquishing all TLC duties to my husband. Unfortunately, it’s not because I’m running off to some exotic island, sweepstakes convention or even for a facial. No, instead I will be reclined and slack jawed, poked and probed for all the wrong reasons. Precious possessions of mine will be ripped from my body and I will pay for the privilege.

Anyone have any advice for post wisdom teeth removal? What will I be able to eat in the following days? What kind of drugs should I demand for afterwards (I’m a pain wuss) and most importantly HOW LONG WILL IT HURT? (Sniff, sniff) I’m really not looking forward to this. Between my needle-phobia and the overwhelming distrust I feel towards anyone who is yanking my teeth out, I know I will be a blubbering mess by 3 pm Friday. Someone hold me, I’m scared.

Happy HNT and enjoy the TLC sent your way…Wendy’s Frosty’s are great the day of, thick soups and apple sauce are great on day two. I only took my Darvocet for a day. Just don’t let them get dry!! Good luck and LET YOURSELF BE PAMPERED

  2. Says:

I cant offer any advice, but I can wish you good luck. Hope you have a speedy recovery. HHNT!

  3. Says:

What a great shot! Good luck with the dentist……take lots of drugs…lol…..Happy HNT!

Oh, wisdom teeth suck. My best
    advise for afterward, WATER, WATER,
WATER. You have to keep those suckers
hydrated. My hubby just had his out
and they gave him painkillers for his
teeth- but I couldn’t tell you know
what the name were. They will hurt
for a bit. You probobly won’t be able
to eat real food for a few days, BUT, if
they have been bothering you, soon they
    will begin to feel great!
Just be sure to do everything you can
to avoid DRY SOCKETS. That sucks! I
had it. So, again, WATER, WATER,
    WATER. Good Luck!!

  5. Says:

    Absolutely beautiful pic. Seriously.

And advice? Do everything they tell you to do afterward. Dry sockets are the WORST!! Good luck!

This is a sweet photo. I’m jealous now!

When I had my wisdom teeth taken out last year, I was told NO CAFFIENE, NO STRAWS, and I was warned that my whole mouth might be sensitive to pressure. So for the first day, I didn’t have anything but water but then again, I was in and out of consciousness (I’m a big pain baby. ow.).

The next few days, I basically had a liquid diet. I drank water and Crystal Lite (my choice, not the doc’s), and to “eat”, I had Campbell’s soup-at-hand. By the end of the second day, I was able to start eating stuff like cheese puffs - you laugh, but I wanted something crunch but “soft”. I didn’t start eating sandwiches or burgers for at least a week, and even then, the pressure was almost too much to handle (read: bread is soft, yes, but to eat it, you have to mash on it with your teeth until they touch each other. Don’t do that unless you’re doped up on drugs and won’t spazz out at the pain).

For pain, I was on Vicodin but for some odd reason, didn’t work as well as Hydrocodone. Vicodin made me feel queasy, but the Hydrocodones (7.5 mg) knocked me on my ass.

This is a long comment, so I’ll try to wrap it up. About 4 days after surgery, I could drink soda - yes! A week after, I could drink out of a straw if I didn’t suck hard. Two weeks after, I was able to eat everything but exceptionally hard food (ice, peppermints) or exceptionally soft food (bread slices, gum). After about a month, I was back to normal.

Ok, I wrote like way too much, but hopefully I helped you out. Good luck and don’t stress out!

This picture made me cry dammit.

  8. Says:

    Painkillers? Stopayne & Myprodol.
    What to eat? Liguid anything.

    Luck!

  9. Says:

I have total sympathy for you. The dentist keeps treatening to have mine pulled too and I am the queen of no needles and no pain!

I am hoping that it goes well for you.

Don’t be afraid to compain about the pain. That is how you get pain killers. ;)

  10. Says:

When you get the answers to the wisdom teeth questions pass them along to me! I’ll be having the same thing done in late July. *whimpers*

  11. Says:

Hopefully this isn’t too late. Are you having them pulled or removed surgically? If you’re not going to be completely under or so goofy on gas that you don’t care (in other words, if you’re just doing it with novocaine) take headphones. Seriously. Go in and lay down and put your headphones in and crank up the music really high. That way you can’t hear the sounds your teeth make when they’re being ripped from your gums. That’s how I had my wisdom teeth removed and I was so grateful that I couldn’t hear it. Plus the music made it so I could pretend I was at a concert…

Afterwards, make sure you have a lot of ice and a lot of soft foods — ice cream, yogurt, soups, popsicles — and expect to be woozy for a while.

My wisdom teeth weren’t impacted or anything, so I was only in pain for a day after the procedure. But if yours were impacted you might be in pain for several days.

Good luck (oh, and I voted for you!)

  12. Says:

Those sneaky bastards would only let me vote once. Hmph.

  13. Says:

Ooooh, good luck with the surgery! I jhave good news for you about it - The fear and anticipation are actually worse than the recovery. Perhaps if was because I literally was convinced the anesthesia would kill me, so I put it off so long the pain from the teeth pushing my other teeth was unbearable. I am the girl with the oddly wired jaw whose mouth won’t go numb, who passes out with novacane! With 4 impacted wisdom teeth.

Even if you are half awake like I was, the sound won’t bother you. The doctor gave me percaset for the pain and that worked well. The first few hours are not a whole lot of fun, but I’m guessing Waaaaaay easier than childbirth (and this only has to be done once - you’ve already had two kids so you are well ahead of the game!). Don’t push down on the guaze afterwards to see “how it feels” (it hurts), and have your hubby or a friend help you change the guaze gently until the bleeding stops.

My first day I ate green jello slurped through my teeth. I looked like a chipmunk with green teeth after that. It was GREAT. I also had soup. It isn’t just the chewing that will be a bit hard, it is opening the mouth bit enough to get food in. And yeah, no straws.

I guess in the long run it is sort of like a bad case of the flu. You eat the same foods you can with the stomach flu, and you are on lots of pain meds. Within 2 days you will probably be weaning off the pain meds, and within 5 starting to eat like a normal person again.

Good luck. I’d tell you not to worry but you won’t get what I mean until after the surgery.

And remember - jello and yogurt are your friend :).

  14. Says:

Ice cream. Though avoid Snickers Ice Cream bars. They have peanuts in them. Ow. Best pain meds I’ve ever had was Darvocet, but I took codeine with the wisdom teeth and it worked fine. Darv might be overkill. Good luck. Hope your recovery is speedy. I know several people who, while in pain, were back to almost normal after only a few days.

  15. Says:

Hope all went well Fidget. I had mine out YEARS ago and they had to surgically remove them. I remember I had percodan (great stuff!) and was not able to eat solid food for a couple of days! Good luck!
    What a lovely picture!

  16. Says:

Don’t use a straw or smoke, you can get dry sockets VERY easily…. and you -dont- want -those-, dear.

Percocet I found was best for me, but if your pain lasts longer than like 4 days, ask the doc to switch you off percocet because it made start getting sick from the narcotics in it.

They will give you a little squirty thing to clean out the area, use it often….food or salt in there = bad……..

    Best of luck to you!

  17. Says:

Ugh,..I hate tooth extractions of ANY kind! I’d tell’em just knock me out & implant a new one, wake me when its healed! HHNT!

  18. Says:

Wisdom teeth out on a Friday?! What a fine way to spend a weekend!

I’ve still got mine, so no advice.

  19. Says:

    That picture is soooooo beautiful.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I only needed pain meds for one day. I took vicodan and it worked well for me. It knocked my butt out and I slept like a baby.

I stuck with jello, soup, popsickles, stuff like that for the first two days.

I was kinda queasy for a couple hours from being “under”, so don’t be surprised if you get a little dizzy.

Take your pain meds and try to sleep through at least the first several hours.

Try not to worry. This one isn’t bad at all. If you’ve given birth, this will be a piece of cake. :)

  20. Says:

I had my wisdom teeth out two days after I was laid off from a job. It cost a fortune, and I insisted and begged to be out of it on a valium injection (sooooo gooood).
Painkillers were great, and the pain was just not a big deal at all. Dissolving stitches however are revolting. It is really not as bad as it sounds, and I am so phobic of ANYTHING slightly medical.

    Good Luck! Anne

  21. Says:

    : )

  22. Says:

Those are beautiful pictures. I had my teeth out fourteen years ago and don’t really remember too much. My husband had his out a couple months ago and was fine after a couple days. I hope all goes well for you.

  23. Says:

Good luck with the wisdom teeth coming out! I had 2 out when I was 14, and 2 out when I was 15. I was awake for both procedures, but I was so doped up on novacaine (he used like 5 shots), plus sweet, sweet nitrous. They did give me a headset to listen to, but I could still hear the noises that Cristin mentioned… However, they also didn’t bother me, because I was so doped it. It was kind of trippy in a way. Or maybe I’m just weird. :)

I don’t remember much about the aftermath, considering that was 14 and 15 years ago (good Lord), but I remember that I was prescribed percodan and it made me sick as a dog. Percocet I’m fine with, but percodan? No way, no how.

    Good luck!

  24. Says:

I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago. They put me under and then I was waking up, very groggy, but feeling fine. There was a little pain and swelling afterwards but nothing too bad at all. You’ll be just fine–nothing to be scared about!!

  25. Says:

Cheesecake. I ate an entire cheesecake in two days. Soft and good the cheesecake was.

It wasn’t bad at all. I would describe the pain as more of a soreness and it was gone in two days. Of course I was lucky…my FIL was laid up with back pain so I went to stay at the MIL’s house where she lined us up (FIL, me and the Creep) on the couch and took care of us for two days. It was great.

  26. Says:

Hope everything’s going well with the teeth!

That pic of you and hubby is so beautiful!

  27. Says:

Eeeps! Wisdom teeth removal? Ouch! I had all 4 of mine taken out at once… it ain’t fun. But you’ll be looooony when ya get outta that chair. Don’t suck anything through a straw, girl! You do NOT want dry sockets.
Here’s to a speedy recovery, cuddlin’ w/your adorable hubby!
    Happy Belated HNT! =)
