Namely Nutty from A to B

As a young girl I poured great time and attention into naming my dolls and stuffed animals. My favorite Pound Puppy’s name was Penelope, Barbie often went by Anastacia, and my oh so soft and fluffy dress up kitten with the optional fluffy tail extention and button up pastel sweater was known as Samantha.

I still take great pride and care in choosing names. I ponder wild scenarios, mull over details and search for that puzzle perfect fit. It is no accident that our American Bulldog with a penchant for snoring is bestowed with the name Dozer. Bull Dozer, sleeper = dozer… entirely well too thought out. Pickles earned his name more through happenstance. I believe it is the movie “Lady Killers” where there is a cat named Pickles. It struck me as the perfect silly little name for an overly prissy or preened dog and I declared that if ever such an animal waltzed into our lives, Pickles would be his name. Thus as the trembling puddle of dog jello slowly lifted his head higher as we drove further from the shelter, perfectly positioning his paws as though to make them appeared pointed, Pickles was named.

My children’s names have received even more time and attention. It drives my husband insane. He would prefer to wait till they emerge into the world before pondering any names and I wonder if this had to do with his three nameless days in the world. I require a list. I don’t want to make some sleep deprivation or medication induced decision that would later require reversal and much public humiliation. I had a friend who ’s name was inadvertently recorded as “Alluicious Sasperella” when her father made an off the cuff joke and her mother was still loopy from medication. The abomination was later corrected but never forgotten.

The very day the magic pee stick informed me of my current condition I immediately headed out to pick up the book I had been coveting. With no REAL reason to buy it, I had kept telling myself “one day” though I longed to pour over the pages, hilighter in hand, pondering the possibilities- 65,000 more possibilities than the last one I had in my possession. HAZZAH! Now it is mine and now I turn to you dear readers. I want to hear about what you like and dislike. What kinds of characteristics you associate with names. Tut, tut I’m not looking for you to vomit up your list of 5,000 names I want to take this slow, relish it a bit. Just a few letters at a time. Let’s start at the very beginning, I’ve heard rumor that it’s a very good place to start.

Boys and Girls names that begin with A & B

Girl A Names
Audrey
Audra
Anastasia
Aubrey
Anya
Ana
Anabel
Ann Marie
Arabella

Boy A Names
Alden
Asher

Girl B Names
Betty
Betsy
Bianca

Boys B Names
Blaze
Boden
Beck (can I admit that without seeming like a pop-culture whore?)
Brody
Brodie

What is on your list? Anything that you can not stand? Even if the name is a bit outrageous or a mouthful I’d still love to hear it.

Ok, only thinking about letters A-B and considering your last name I love Anya and Blaze. I have a childhood friend whose younger brothers name is Blaise and have always loved it. As far as my personal choices…Molly (which is a song by Sponge from long ago that is oddly one of “our songs” and has always been what we would name a girl) and Daniel (Elton John song). I was named after “Michele” by the Beatles and while my parents didn’t do much right I like the idea of naming kids after songs. Plus “Dan Moorman” is a total pro-football quarterback name. While Molly Moorman really only sets her up for a one name stripper name or a red headed doll of sorts. I can’t wait for C-D, this is going to be fun.

My brother’s name is Asher. Brody is our boy name if we have a boy ever. I also like Avery for a girl, but cannot use it.

I have little bit of a thing for cowboy names, so when I put my possible names out there on email for all of my bitches oops girlfriends to peruse, they suggested why not just saddle or twig or stirrup. Everone breathed a sigh of relief when i had a girl, so I did not name a son Shane…what the hey is wrong with that I say?????
Would never be obnoxious enough to comment on your choices, but let it be known I like most of them….

    Anne

My best friend did name her daughter Anastasia and calls her Tasha.

I liked Brenden for a boy, but I was out voted on it for Logan (which is ok too)

I am partial to Becca for a girl, but that is because that is what I call my baby girl.

I like Blaze, but I can’t see it for a boy. It is only because there was a movie called Blaze and it was about a woman. So, I think of a red headed woman when I hear that name.

I love the name Brodie, makes me think of Patrick Swayze in Point Break. Prob not what you want in a baby name though. LOL

I’m four months pregnant and for A names I have Annabelle and Abigail. I can’t use Annabelle though, because one of my dog’s names is Annie. My husband won’t let me re-use that name (bastard!). I didn’t even bother with any B names, because our last name starts with “O”. And giving a kid the initials B.O. would just be cruel! And I started looking BEFORE I was pregnant.

  6. Says:

Wow all the choices…I am such a dork. Matthew for a boy (no arguments it is settled and if there are two then Joey for the other)

Girls….Veronica … not sure what would happen if there were to be another ….

Does the husband have a say here? Nope unless he is agreeing to these!

lame, boring … chosen … hehe! I love that you are totally into the choosing of the name…and I think Pickles is a great name!

  7. Says:

Anya and Asher are my top A picks. I like Blaze but all I see is a black pony with a stripe down his face! Takes me back to my childhood when, like you, I also had to name everything!

  8. Says:

Skipping to E…I love Ella. Love Love Love it! But I also like Aubrey and Anabel…and Blaise. Jace and Kaden.

  9. Says:

Okay, these have nothing to do with A or B, but I love the name Marin for a girl. We couldn’t use it because of the twin thing, and Gabe said it rhymed with Ian.

I also like Chloe and Piper for girls and Justin for a boy.

  10. Says:

Having just gone thru the hell that is picking a baby’s name, I’ll chime in.

I love Anabel. The other A names we were mulling over were Ava and Aurelia. I also like Audrey but my husband said no, because it’s his grandmother’s name.

My only issue with Betty or Betsy is that people will invariably think her name is really Elizabeth and she’ll spend a lot of time explaining it. But they’re both cute names - I like Betsy a little better than Betty. Bianca is lovely, too.

I’m opinionless on boys names. This is my third girl in a row and I can’t seem to think of cool boys names to save my life. The only one that comes to mind is Aidan, which is very popular.

  11. Says:

Well I am partial to Braden. Gee, I wonder why? And refering to the comment above, his last name does start with an “O”. I hestitated about this but the two names sounds so awesome together, I figured it was a price to pay. And really NO ONE gives a crap anymore about initials like they did when we were kids. He has never had a problem with it.

A friend of mine has a daughter named Alora and my twins middle names are Alivia and Alizabeth.

  12. Says:

Hmm…my faves are Audrey, Audra, Asher and Brody.
Some of the girl A-names sound a bit too fairy-tale-ish for my taste…and I fear that Blaze would forever be teased about being a comic book character.
I’ll be very interested to see what you pick though! Name choosing is SO HARD.

  13. Says:

I go by the name Ella, sometimes ^^
I once liked Artemisa, Bianca is nice too.
    I decided to choose Miranda.
I dont even look at boys’ names, but anything not biblical is good for me in boys names.

  14. Says:

    I love Audrey. So elegant.

  15. Says:

    My votes are:

    Girl A: Audrey

    Boy A:Asher
    Boy B:Brodie

    This is fun!
