Baby Names: beating a dead horse

I was so hopeful, things started out promising. I avoided nagging him and he soon came around to discussing names. The man who had a bird named bird, named our first dog after his nephew and pretty much refused to discuss names until our last son was actually born, leaving wee #4 nameless for several days WANTED to discuss names.

Yeah, HA! More like he wanted to shoot down my entire list, make no suggestions and then fall asleep mid discussion. I should have seen this coming right?

(Big sigh)

So we have 2 names he likes:

Bridget and Fiona

and I can’t say that I am really feeling either of them right now.

Bridget isn’t bad but I have a picture of what Bridget looks and acts like in my mind and I don’t know that she will match up with that (I had the same thoughts on the name Donovan and Bo came out 180 degrees from who Donovan was in my mind).

Fiona is a name I’ve liked for awhile but there’s that whole Shrek thing and even more annoying is how Mira chews on the name when she says it: FEE-OWN-NAH. Every.single.time.

Instead of jabbing sharpened pencils into my ears every time she utters Fiona, I’d pick a nickname and run with it but Fifi isn’t exactly my style (read GAG) which would leave us with… uhh Na Na? No thanks.

So we have Bridget

and I’m not sure I’m content with that.

  • I love Bridget. Fifi would make me run for the hills too. You guys will find the name when you least expect it, it will be there.

    fidget Reply:

Fifi is a poodle right? A fooffy poodle, not a little girl

  • Your husband sounds a lot like my husband. And then, right before heading to the hospital to push the kid out, he’s frantically searching for and offering names. At which point, I’ll pretty much agree to anything.

    fidget Reply:

well at least he starts suggesting something at some point, all my hubs can manage to do is kill a name, not actually come up with one

    Hey, Fidj -

I’ll shoot the breeze with you any damn time about names – I LOVE names!

Sure, I’m not your husband and I have no 50% stake in the creation of this new kiddo, but I can’t help WANTING to help – AND I can sympathize – my husband thought it was funny to suggest THE STUPIDEST names he could think of whenever I wanted to talk about baby names.

Your names seem to be more unique and eccletic (but not in a BAD way – rather the opposite)! How about:

    Avery
    Corinne/Corrine
    Lily
    Zoe/Zoey
    Audrey
    Piper
    Asia
    India
    Ruby
    Scarlet
    Lila
    Talia
    Lucy
    Story
    Willow
    Isla
    Clementine
    Ione
    Maeve
    Maisie
    Zara
    Clara
    Lea/Leah
    Sonora
    Loralei

If you like these names – YAY! If you hate them, well perhaps it’ll stimulate conversation with the hubster (you can mock them together…!)

For the record, I like a LOT of them, but tried to think of names I thought you might like, too.

    :o )

    fidget Reply:

Avery- i wish this was still a boys name!
Corinne/Corrine- Corrina is one of my old faves, Hubs said NO
    Lily- too popular
Zoe/Zoey- Tessa was almost Zoey until i realized how popular it was here
Audrey- love this and Aubrey but both are in top 100
Piper- always been on the fence about this one, some days i like it others I dont
    Asia- nope
India- not bad, but cant picture calling one of my kids India
Ruby- that stupid show Max & Ruby has killed this name for me
    Scarlet- middle name potential
Lila- i know a bunch of little Lilas and Laylas
Talia- Hubs had a brief love affair with this name, it doesnt do it for me
Lucy- had an evil dog named Lucy, ruins it for Hubs
Story- have considered, Hubs thinks it’s silly
    Willow- not sure
    Isla- nah
Clementine- its a long name but no obvious solid nickname. tiny? which would prolly end up ironic considering our height
    Ione – not feeling it
Maeve- my brother in law would beat me to death with my own arms if i “stole” this
Maisie- its one troy likes, might be a middle name. Considered it with tessa
Zara- have pondered it, I also like Zyra
    Clara- classic but locally popular
    Lea/Leah- too close to Levi
    Sonora- not feeling it
Loralei- I dig it, Hubs doesnt plus 2 babies in my due date club are going to be named Loralei

    Hey….I LOVE the name Bridget…..but then again, I’m a bit biased…lol.

  • Oh! Eleri is the name of a river in Wales… It rhymes with celery, but it’s always been my favorite name ever. EVER.

    http://www.sacredwaters.co.uk/CwmEleri.html

I would hotlink that for you, but I don’t feel like it.

    fidget Reply:

i actually totally love it spelled Ellerie or Ellery. Have tried to talk The Hubster into it but he complains that it rhymes with celery pffft.

  • For the record, I think Bridget is a fabulous name. :-)

Seriously, it’s not a name you hear all the time but it’s not weird.

You occasionally get called “Brittney” or “Bethany” or “Brenda”. (Yeah, I’m not sure why people can’t get it right either…)

There will always be some smart-ass who calls you “bri-jzeet” in a horrible French accent.

You will never be able to find the name pre-printed on anything: hairclips, pencils, those little bicycle tags, etc.

But…if someone calls your name, you are sure they’re talking to you(and not one of the other 100 Jennifer’s in school).

I’ve never met a Bridget with anything less than beautiful eyes.

I’ve never met a Bridget who’s doesn’t have a good sense of humor.

And I like to think that Bridget is a good, strong name. It does mean “strength”.

Good luck with the name game. I hope Bridget is a Bridget, and that she’s happy, funny and adorable with great eyes!

    fidget Reply:

ive never been able to find pre printed stuff with my kids names, LOL and I’m pretty sure the beautiful eyes and sense of humor are a given, I mean just LOOK at who her mother is *rofl*

  • We thought we had a name picked out for our son but one day I woke up and was all, “Yeah, that’s NOT his name.” So now we have another name but neither of us want to commit to it yet. Why is this so tricky?

Also, brave of you for sharing…we’re not telling anybody until he’s good and named. ha

    fidget Reply:

no one will know the name until she is named :) Mostly because we wont have THE NAME until we see her! Smart not telling anyone though, there will always be nay sayers. I have caught so much flack over my kids names pre birth and then people are like oh wow, that suits them *rolls eyes*

  • Well, since Fiona is out (which I totally dug) I like Ellery and Bridget. But that said, when I first said Bridget I thought Fidget but that might just be because of the Fiona thing. :)

I’m guessing something like Samantha or Sydney are out? (kidding, kidding).

  • I love Fiona, use Fi for short. Like on Burn Notice! That Fi is a bomb building arms dealing badass.

  • My husband is a name shooter downer too. I come up with names months before I even get pregnant and then hold onto them in my mind. My husband bitches and moans shoots everything down but never comes up with anything better so in the end I get the name that I thought up ages ago.

I would not be big on the Fiona thing either, Shrek is a funny movie but still. You are pushing the kid out, you should get final say on names.

  • Kelly

I’ve always thought that Melody was such a pretty name. And, since I’m never going to have babies, you may use it. ;)

  • I think that Aunt Becky has a lovely ring to it.

  • I’m not big fan of Bridget. Makes me think of Bridgette Nielsen. *shudder*
I like Fiona but only somewhat. Here’s some names I thought of:

    Astrid
    Megan
    Mallory
    Macey
    Paisley
    Adelaide
    Adele
    Calliope
    Carrisa
    Audra
    Skylar
    Amelia
    Greyson
    Presley
    *Lillian* (BIG fan! LOL)

    Any Yays or all Nays?

    fidget Reply:

Mallory we took off the list b/c it means “unlucky” which is a shame b/c i love it
Adele is another one i <3 but hubs wont go for
Macey we both like but we live 10 minutes from Macy’s department store so it’s weird
Audra i like a lot but hubs is iffy on it
Paisley is one that keeps popping up
Lillian Hubs likes but it’s very popular here

  • Not a big Bridgette fan either. Every one that I have known was not very nice. My new favorite name is Esme.

  • Kasey

    I love
    Stella
    Emma
    Desiree
    Mariah

    fidget Reply:

Stella was on my list with Tessa, I now have “associations” I would need to get over to use it

  • Dana

I really like all your others kids names. What do you think of Nola?

    Or
    Norah
    Gillian
    Jacey
    Morgan
    Kaylene

  • This baby feels like a Bertina to me… ber – tina… but you know my kids names so that prety much explains my idiotness. LOL
    I also like Mattie.. :)

  • julie

    Isis pronounced e-sis

  • Here’s a few I’ve considered…
    1. Lexis
    2. Fawn
    3. Isabel
    4. Jade
    5. Trixie ( yes seriously)
    6. Judith (as a middle name – my mom’s name)
    7. Ruby (was my grandmother’s name)
    8. Delilah (well the man really liked this one, I didn’t)
    9. Sage
    10. Star

I’m sure you’ll settle on the perfect name before she’s here :)

  • we’re bad… we don’t have but cursory discussions about names until the baby is born. it stresses me out to think about naming someone. i don’t like the responsibility. LOL.

  • Roy Sprunger

Well, you know my predilection for family history. When in doubt, choose one from your family tree by several generations. Or, make one up, like Eringobragh . Or take a common name and split it. While I don’t know why they did it, a deceased sister of mine was named Kris Tina Sprunger, so my wife and I named our daughter after her. Even when she was adopted by another family, they kept her first and middle names the same. I’ve always been partial to Elizabeth, I suppose because there are so many nicknames, like “E”, “El”, “Eliza”, “Beth”, “E.B.”, etc. One of Troy’s aunt’s was named Erma and another Grace.

But if you really want to be different, yet not too much so, give the child initials. My sister’s name is Judy Robin. Her first marriage was to a Dunn. So, folks started calling her J.D.

    Just a thought.
